Give Him Praise

The heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built! (2 Chronicles 6:12-21)

Solomon began by highlighting God’s holiness and faithfulness. Then he gave God credit for the success of the project and emphasized God’s greatness, declaring, “The heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I have built!” (2 Chron. 6:18).

After exalting God, Solomon asked Him to pay special attention to everything that happened inside the temple. He asked God to show mercy to the Israelites and to provide for them when they confessed their sin.

Immediately after Solomon’s prayer, “fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the house” (7:1). This incredible response reminds us that the mighty One we praise and speak to when we pray is the same One who listens to and cares about our requests. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

When I read this it reminded me that so often we seek God in prayer for what we need when it’s so important to take time to spend in prayer giving Him praise and thanksgiving for every thing in our lives. Let’s take time today and just give Him the praise and honor He deserves and put our requests off to the side for a day, He already knows what we have need of before we even ask so let’s prioritize God today and have a conversation with Him today about how mighty He is and how grateful we are. When we do that we will find that everything else, our needs, our wants, will all fall into place and we will find a peace so so sweet. He deserves our praise. Let’s draw closer to Him as we pray. He is worthy of our praise!! Amen!

Have a wonderful day in The Lord!

By Faith

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)

The Hebrews 11 definition of faith is pretty straight forward. The Christian faith means confidently hope in the promises of God. Not pretend to “hope” but actually pessimistically doubt, we are to confidently hope. There ought to be a certain bounce in our step because our confidence in God’s promises is so great. We know He will fulfill His commitments to us.

Our confidence in His promises come from our assurance in what we do not see. This is such a hard thing because we humans don’t see a whole lot. For starters, we don’t even get to see God Himself. We are taking it on faith that He even exists. It’s not a baseless faith, but it is faith without sight. And we also don’t get to see how God is working for us behind the scenes and out of our sight. This blindness can often be a harder leap of faith then the leap in believing in God at all. Not knowing how God is going to work all things together for our good and yet remaining confident in our hope in Him? That’s not an easy ask. But it’s not one the Lord asks of us ignorantly either. While God doesn’t know what ignorance is like, He knows us. He created us and He perfectly comprehends how we function and how challenging it is for us to walk faithfully when we cannot see what the full picture of what is happening or how it will end.

The mystery of faith and the assurance about what we don’t see has been compared to quilt-making. On the underside of the quilt, all you can see is the knots, the apparently hapless crisscrossing of different threads and colors. It looks like a disaster, a mess. But on the right side of the quilt, we see a beautifully embroidered pattern, one that could only be wrought by a master seamstress. We live on the underside of the quilt. But we like to think that we are living on the right side of the quilt, so when things go wrong, we panic and think that the design of our lives has gone terribly wrong and that everything is ruined. But there is a master Designer knitting and knotting us into a beautiful work that only He can see. We have to trust that the knots and messes of our lives are being worked out into beauty as our God has promised. We are to have assurance that He sees what we do not and confident hope in the promises He has made to us.

When I read this it blessed me and I wanted to share it with someone today. I trust there is someone who needed this today. What a mighty God we serve.

Have a wonderful day in The Lord!

Smile

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. (Proverbs 17:22)

A smile has a fascinating effect on our brain chemistry. Researchers have found that “when we smile it releases brain chemicals called endorphins which have an actual physiological relaxing effect. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Eph. 4:31–32).

When anger or tension or bitterness threatens our relationship with the Lord and with others, it helps to remember that “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine” for our own joy and well-being.

Think about a time when you were angry with someone or when you had an argument. How did you feel inside? What parts of your life did it affect?

After reading this I couldn’t help but think of a saying I’ve seen in times past, When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile. Let’s be the reason someone smiles today.

Trust God to Faithfully Keep You!

Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. (Philippians 4:1)

I recently read, In our journey of faith, how can we finish the race well and “press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”? (Phil. 3:14). Like the cable car, we keep a strong grip on Christ, which is what Paul meant when he said “stand fast in the Lord” (4:1). We have no resources of our own. We depend fully on Christ to keep us moving forward. He will take us through the greatest challenges and lead us safely home.

Toward the end of his earthly life, the apostle Paul declared, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7). You can too. Simply keep a strong grip on Christ.

We’re grateful, Lord, that while we aim to keep a strong grip on You, You always keep a strong grip on us! You are working in us and giving us what we need to continue trusting You on our faith journey. Amen.

Have a wonderful day in The Lord!

My Speech Toward Others

Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. (James 3:9-10)

I’ve certainly cast a few angry insults, wishes for harm or embarrassment and general abuse on my fellow man. Some of them have definitely deserved it. But it’s not about whether or not they deserve it, thank God. Because if they deserve it then I sure do too. But it’s about what my tongue and the way I use it reveals about my heart.

When I worship Jesus as the Creator of all, as the heavenly Father and Savior and then I get in my car and get ticked off with the first person that cuts me off in traffic, I am betraying that my heart doesn’t think much of God’s creation. And if I don’t think of much of His creation, what does that say about what we really think of the Creator? The way we speak to His children reflects our feelings for the Father.

The quickest way to make me your friend is to be kind to my kids. If you say you love me and that you think I’m great and then ignore or belittle my children, there’s no way I’ll believe that you love me. But if you walk into my house and get down on their level and play and laugh with my kids, I probably won’t even need to hear you tell me that you love me because I will already feel so loved because of how you loved on my children. God is a Father and in a similar way, when we worship Him and then treat His children carelessly or cruelly, our worship falls flat in His ears. But when we actively work to encourage, build up and serve His children, He sees our love for Him in action because of how we love His children.

The most beautiful voice in the world could praise God every Sunday, but if that voice speaks harshly of others and abuses them, it is only an obnoxious, resounding gong to the Lord. We cannot truly worship the Father when we are tearing down His children. What comes off our tongue is reflective of what is in our hearts and minds and that is where the change must occur. We must ask God to show us others through His eyes so that we can love them as He does. When we see those around us, not as pests and nuisances or worse, but as beloved beings made in the image of our Redeemer, it will transform our thoughts toward them and as a result, our speech toward them too.

I recently read this and I wanted to share it with you all. I feel it is something we should all be reminded of. Let’s make a conscious effort today and every day to see others through His eyes so that we can love them like He does.

Transform my thought today Lord and as a result my speech toward others as well, for greater is he that is within me, than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). Amen.

Have a wonderful day in The Lord!

God’s Mercy

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. (John 8:7)

I recently read. As a group of religious leaders herded an adulterous woman toward Jesus, they couldn’t know they were carrying her within a stone’s throw of grace. Their hope was to discredit Him. If He told them to let the woman go, they could claim He was breaking Mosaic law. But if He condemned her to death, the crowds following Him would have dismissed His words of mercy and grace.

But Jesus turned the tables on the accusers. Scripture says that rather than answering them directly, He started writing on the ground. When the leaders continued to question Him, He invited any of them who had never sinned to throw the first stone, and then He started writing on the ground again. The next time He looked up, all the accusers were gone.

Now the only person who could have thrown a stone—the only sinless one—looked at the woman and gave her mercy. “And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” (John 8:11).

Whether today finds you needing forgiveness for judging others or desiring assurance that no sin is beyond His grace, be encouraged by this: No one is throwing stones today; go and be changed by God’s mercy.

Father, cleanse me of my judging nature and free me from the bonds of sin. Let me taste Your mercy and then help me to live a changed life. Amen.

This is the Day!

This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24)

Have you ever said, “I can’t wait for this week to be over?” How about, “This is the worst day ever!” How many days have you just “wanted to get through it?”

Psalms 118 reminds us that each day we have, is a day created by God. It is a day we should rejoice in, a day we should be happy. It is not a day where we should be burdened by the stress of our lives, but a day that we should be praising and thanking God.

Psalm 118 reminds us that everyday we have is a gift. A day that we should treasure, because we do not know if it will be our last. Everyday is a day we are able share God’s love, and his joy.

What I find most interesting, is that many Christians are not filled with joy. Many Christians do not smile at a new day, just because it exists. They do not realize the mystery and frailty of that day. Instead, we take the gifts we have for granted, and grumble about our work.

We complain about having too much paperwork, too much homework, an unhappy boss, our hours… We tell people how bad our day is going…

And yet, the most afflicted Christians spoke of how “joyful,” they were. Christians who were jailed, beaten, and killed because of their beliefs. In Acts 2:28, Luke says: Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

Shouldn’t that be the attitude we all have? Shouldn’t we be grateful for being able to know God? To have a personal relationship with him? To have another day in his presence? Shouldn’t we be grateful that we have another day to spend with our friends and family?

Shouldn’t we wake up everyday, and think to ourselves, “This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it….”

We need to be joyful for what we have, and remember that everyday God is sharing his love with us. Everyday is a chance to be loved by him, and to return his love.

I woke up this morning with Psalm 118:24 on my heart and so as I searched Psalm 118 I came across this devotion and it blessed me so much, I had to share. It caused me to stop and question how I approach each day. Yes, I am guilty of complaining about my day, my week and forgetting to be grateful for being able to know God to have a personal relationship with Him, to have another day in his presence surrounded by friends and family. Help me God to wake up each day filled with joy and gratefulness for another day to be alive and to think or say to myself, This is the day which The Lord hath made, I will rejoice and be glad in it. You are the master of your own emotions, no one or thing can still your joy, you have to allow them, give them or it permission to rob from you. It’s no different than if you gladly opened your door to a robber and said come on in and take what you want, our lives, our joy is a gift from God, why just give it away and allow the enemy to rob from you today or any other day. Think on this today as you maybe approach a not so great day. Spend time today in His presence. He’s waiting.

Trust Him

Be still, and know that I am God . . . (Psalm 46:10)

When Jesus was denouncing the unrepentant towns where He had done most of His miracles (Matt. 11:20–24), He still had words of comfort for those who would come to Him. He said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (vv. 28–29).

This statement is striking! Immediately following His strong words for those who were rejecting Him, Jesus extended an invitation to all to draw near to Him to find the peace we all yearn for. Jesus is the only one who can calm our restless, weary souls.

No matter what you go through, no matter what your currently dealing with always remember, the Lord is faithful. He will provide, even in the darkest moments, He is there. I once heard a saying, When God leads you to the edge of the cliff, trust Him fully and let go. Only one of two things will happen: either He’ll catch you when you fall, or He’ll teach you how to fly! God closes doors no man can open and God opens doors no man can close. Trust Him to be the door keeper of your life. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path (Psalm 119:105).

I come to You now, Lord, in need of rest for my heart. Help me to trust You and be confident in Your love and in Your direction. Guide my every footstep. Amen.

Pass It On!

We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. (Psalm 78:4)

I recently read, I enjoy watching relay races. The physical strength, speed, skill, and endurance required of the athletes amaze me. But one crucial point of the race always gets my special attention and makes me anxious. It is the moment the baton is passed to the next athlete. One moment of delay, one slip, and the race could be lost.

In a sense, Christians are in a relay race, carrying the baton of faith and the knowledge of the Lord and of His Word. And the Bible tells us about our need to pass this baton from one generation to another. In Psalm 78, Asaph declares: “I will utter . . . dark sayings of old: which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done” (vv. 2–4).

Moses said something similar to the Israelites: “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons” (Deut. 4:9).

For generations to come, we are called to lovingly and courageously do whatever we can to pass along “the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).

Father, help me to be faithful in passing my faith along to someone else. Amen

Hope and Encouragement

The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary . . . (Isaiah 50:4)

When we struggle in the circumstances of life, an encouraging word from others can lift our spirits and our eyes to the Lord. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary” (50:4). And when we look to the Lord, He offers words of hope and light in the darkness.

Heavenly Father, help me to hear Your word of hope today. And help me to speak words of hope and encouragement to others, pointing them to You. Amen

When I read this devotion I immediately thought it wasn’t super lengthy but it was direct and to the point. Some days that’s just what we need. It’s so elementary but it’s important to be reminded of the simple things. It’s so easy to get so caught up with life that we fail to stop and offer hope and encouragement to someone in our path. What a difference we can make just by being an encouragement to someone today. Let’s take time today to find someone in need and encourage them with words of hope and encouragement, someone needs you today. Will you be the vessel God uses? Are you willing to say, Here am I Lord, use me.

A Prayer To Forgive Yourself!

Dear Lord. Today I choose to forgive myself. I believe the work of the Cross was enough, and through Your blood, I have the power to be forgiven and to forgive.

I let go of guilt, shame, anxiety and torment knowing that You are no longer counting my sins against me, and neither will I.

Lord, You have set me free from my past and made me a new creation. I will no longer walk in condemnation or live a life of misery, because I forgive myself.

I choose to walk in Your truth that says, “He who the Son sets free is free indeed!

Amen.

I have been struggling with shame, anxiety and failure and the enemy had been tormenting me so badly that I literally made myself sick because of it but The Lord brought me to this prayer and it changed the way I seen those things that the enemy was using to consume my mind with. I am a good mother, wife and friend and even on days when I’m not in my opinion top notch, God has set me free and I have so much to rejoice over in knowing that I am loved and forgiven by a God who sacrificed His son to set me free, free from shame, anxiety and even failure. I choose today to put God first and to admit, I don’t always have it figured out and that’s okay but I know a God who does and He sees me for who I truly am and He loves me, I choose to forgive myself as Christ has forgiven me. I am surrounded by so many blessings in my life, I am going to open my eyes to those blessings today and rejoice because I am loved by the Creator Himself.

Our Tongue

A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4)

A soothing, nurturing word plants seeds of life where the perverse, obstinate tongue crushes and destroys. We know, or at least can know with a little thought, which result our words will have. There are very few things that can be said that could go either way, especially when context is applied. It is so simple to pause momentarily and ask ourselves if what we are about to say will give life or crush it. And in those rare cases in which we aren’t sure of the answer, we probably ought to err on the side of caution and silence our tongues altogether.

As beings created in the image of God, we have an incredible and ultimate example before us in the Lord. He who spoke life itself into existence, who called the sun and moon into their places, the same One who stilled the stormy seas with a word, is the One whose example we ought to follow when we speak. You and I may not be capable of issuing forth galaxies with our tongues, but we can bring light into the life of another and reflect our Heavenly Father as we speak to His children.

Heavenly Father, may we be mindful of our words and plant seeds of life today. Help us to build up and not tear down. Even in the moments when we feel what we have to say is justified may we stop for just a moment and ask ourselves, will these next words build up or tear down, will I be bringing light into this individuals life today? May we choose to reflect You today by what we choose to say. Amen.

Seasons of Trial

My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations. (James 1:2)

James wrote, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing” (James 1:2–4).

It is in the season of trial that God’s purposes are often realized, for there the conditions are right for us to grow into spiritual maturity. This growth not only equips us for living, but it also enables us to more accurately reflect Jesus to a world that desperately needs Him.

In the hands of our Father, our trials can achieve His purposes for our good and for His honor. They can shape us into the likeness of His Son.

Father, teach me to trust You for the strength to endure difficulties and the faith to wait for Your good purposes to be accomplished in me. Amen.

Amen and Amen!!! It is in the seasons of trial that God’s purposes are often realized. Wow!! That right there is so powerful, if we would just grasp the truth in that, He and He alone is our strength. He has a purpose for everything we go through, we may not realize the why at the time but He is faithful and true and He doesn’t just allow us to go through trials to watch us struggle but to build purpose out of it and even if we don’t see the purpose in the moment there will come a time when we will realize the why and we will be able to touch many lives because of that season of trial. God is so faithful! Trust Him, even in the midst of your trial.

A Safe Resting Place

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. (Psalm 55:22)

Certain situations in life require us to spend our mental, physical, or emotional energy in a way that we can’t sustain. David described a time when his enemies were threatening him and he felt the emotional weight of their anger. He needed to escape the distress he was experiencing.

As he processed his feelings, he found a way to rest in his troubled thoughts. He said, “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee” (Ps. 55:22). He recognized that God supports us if we dare to release our problems to Him. We don’t have to take charge of every situation and try to craft the outcome—that’s exhausting! God is in control of every aspect of our life.

Instead of trying to do everything in our own effort, we can find rest in God. Sometimes it’s as simple as asking Him to handle our problems. Then we can pause, relax, and enjoy the knowledge that He is sustaining us.

God, today I give my problems to You. I know that You are in control of everything and I believe You are willing to help me. Please help me to find peace in You. Amen.

Have a wonderful day in The Lord.

Fragrance of Christ

For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved . . . (2 Corinthians 2:15)

I recently read, When writing to the followers of Christ in the city of Corinth, Paul at one point used an example that would have reminded them of a victorious Roman army in a conquered city burning incense (2 Cor. 2:14). The general would come through first, followed by his troops and then the defeated army. For the Romans, the aroma of the incense meant victory; for the prisoners, it meant death.

Paul said we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ’s victory over sin. God has given us the fragrance of Christ Himself so we can become a sweet-smelling sacrifice of praise. But how can we live so we spread this pleasing fragrance to others? We can show generosity and love, and we can share the gospel with others so they can find the way to salvation. We can allow the Spirit to display through us His gifts of love, joy, and kindness (Gal. 5:22–23).

Do others observe us and say, “This is Jesus’s work”? Are we allowing Him to spread His fragrance through us and then telling others about Him? He is the Ultimate Perfumer—the most exquisite fragrance there will ever be.

Do others recognize the work of God in my life? Am I spreading the fragrance of Christ? How?

Have a wonderful day in The Lord!
